The NBA season is almost upon us and the teams are gearing up to begin the regular season. We as fans have waited many months for basketball to return to us. Here I’m gonna do a season preview and do a team by team breakdown and give my opinion on what can be expected from each team this year.
I’ll start out WEST
2011-2012 West Review (last season)
West champs- Oklahoma City Thunder
Regular season Conference Champs- San Antonio Spurs
Regular season Division Champs- San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers
2012- 2013 Western Conference PREVIEW
Oklahoma City Thunder- 1st in Northwest Division 2011-2012
Current players- Russell Westbrook, Thabo Sefolosha, Kendrick Perkins, Eric Maynor, Reggie Jackson, Serge Ibaka, Cole Aldrich, Daequan Cook, Nick Collison, James Harden, Lazar Hayward, Perry Jones, DeAndre Liggins, Daniel Orton, Andy Rautins, Walker Russel, Hasheem Thabeet, Hollis Thompson
Preview- OKC has basically the same roster that took them to the NBA FINALS in 2012. I guess they believe in the saying if it isn’t broken why fix it. Well this teams made it to the finals last year but couldn’t cross the last hurdle and beat the Miami Heat. The only real changes the Thunder have made is drafting Perry Jones III (i believe this to be one of the steals of the draft) and adding Hasheem Thabeet(i really don’t believe him to be a worthwhile addition). They did not address there issues of scoring off the bench outside James Harden. This team will again be elite and have a chance for the title. This team gets better every year but a lot is to be seen against the New Look Lakers and Miami Heat. Can OKC cross the final hurdle, we shall see.
Denver Nuggets- 2nd in Northwest Division in 2011-2012
Current Players: Andre Iguodala, Javale Mcgee, Corey Brewer, Anthony Carter, Wilson Chandler, Kenneth Faried, Evan Fournier, Danilo Gallinari, Jordan Hamilton, Kosta Koufos, Quincy Miller, Andre Miller, Timofey Mozgov, Anthony Randolph, Julyan Stone, Ben Uzoh
Preview- Anybody who watched the Nuggets last year know this is a fun team to watch. They get up and down the floor at break-neck pace. They made some interesting additions this off season. The addition of Andre Iguodala was just a perfect fit for this team as he loves playing in the open court and is a athletic, high quality finisher. The addition of Anthony Randolph should help with the front line and rookie Quincy Miller(picked in the 2nd round but was projected lottery pick the year before) looks like a player. This team should be fun to watch again and should definitely make the playoffs again. Do i see them getting past the 2nd round in the playoffs? Simple answer is No, the west is to skilled and too deep but still don’t sleep on this high octane offence or they will just blow by you.
Utah Jazz – 3rd in Northwest Division in 2011-2012
Current Players: Raja Bell, Alec Burks, Brian Butch, Demarre Carroll, Jeremy Evans, Derrick Favors, Randy Foye, Trey Gilder, Gordon Hayward, Darnell Jackson, Al Jefferson, Enes Kanter, Paul Millsap, Kevin Murphy, Chris Quinn, Jamaal Tinsley, Earl Watson, Mo Williams, Marvin Williams
Preview- Man this is a tough team to figure out. Nobody expected them to make the playoffs last year but they did(got swept by the SAS). They made some key plays in the offseason in getting Mo Williams and getting rid of Devin Harris. They also got swingman Marvin Williams to strengthen up that wing. This is a hard team to predict this year because of their young talent. If they are to make the playoffs Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors and Alec Burks will have to have breakout seasons. If all this potential is realized and this teams grows they can be a contender for the playoffs, but at the moment they are on the outside looking in.
Portland Trailblazers- 4th in Northwest Division in 2011-2012
Current Players: LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum, Elliot Williams, Wesley Matthews, Nolan Smilth, Meyers Leonard, Will Barton, Jared Jeffries, Ronnie Price, Luke Babbitt, J.J. Hickson, Damian Lillard, Victor Claver, Joel Freeland, Sasha Pavlovic
Preview- Portland trailblazers are basically a new team. With the key additions from the draft this year they look like a team that is in the process of rebuilding. A rookie point guard in Damian Lillard, who after the summer league definitely looks like a R.O.Y Candidate and Meyers Leonard who is probably gonna start at centre, this team is probably looking toward the future. They still have the services of Lamarcus Aldridge a proven all-star and swingman Nicholas Batum who definitely has a high upside. This team’s present chances don’t look very high because of the lack of experience and depth on the current roster, but if the players they have develop and reach their individual ceilings, this team has a very bright future.
Minnesota Timberwolves- 5th in Northwest Division in 2011-2012
Current Players: J.J Barea, Chase Budinger, Dante Cunningham, Robbie Hummel, Andrei Kirilenko, Malcolm Lee, Kevin Love, Nikola Pekovic, Luke Ridnour, Brandon Roy, Ricky Rubio, Alexey Shved, Greg Stiemsma, Derrick Williams,
Preview- This is a new look Timberwolves team. Still got the studs from last year in Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio. Still have the big man who was a pleasant surprise last year in Nikola Pekovic and the young prospect in Derrick Williams. They still also have the strong Guard combo with Ridnour and Barea But this roster has made some very key additions. With additions of former All-Stars in Andrei Kirilenko and Brandon Roy. This team has kept its core and made some very interesting additions, but Minnesota has some big questions surrounding them. Will Brandon Roy ever be the player he once was? Will Kirilenko continue the form that he showed in CSKA Moscow last year with being the All-euroleague MVP? Will Ricky Rubio return be his old self after last years disastrous injury and will he be able to stay healthy? Will this team be able to Gel Together? If Minnesota figures everything out and Roy and Kirilenko fit into the roster this team will be a playoff team and will push whoever they face in the first round.
Tomorrow will Preview the Pacific Division
